British Soul, Vol 3, Part 7

I can't think of another sixties act that is reviled as Lulu. Maybe it's the annoying bursts into song, the link-up with Take That in the '90's, 'Boom bang a bang', or her acting skills in 'To Sir with love' but this woman really grinds my gears and it took me a looong time to get over this and dig deeper beyond 'The boat that I row' and 'Love loves to love love' (all Hip Hugger spins back in '95 trainspotters!).

Following the dusting down of a few other choice b's this one really snuck up on me after a view on Youtube. This was about 3 years ago and I snagged a copy just before the Yule- just in time to find the original version by Patti Austin. I don't think there's a fag paper between the two versions and the aforementioned Glaswegian edges it for me. Take her away, sorry...take IT away...

Lulu- Leave a little love

Ketchup

So it was time for a long weekend and catching up with a plethora of dudes not seen for many a day. Whilst in the midst of the dead soldiers and blur of the night before I pored over my first article in print and flitted back to '95 with a couple of tunes that I first dug out back then...that and a hoot fest from Bernard Manning...how often can you say that?! No burlesque again this week but I ain't got owt that knocked me out so I wasn't gonna retread the same old hooey like some folks do...

So Kippington Lodge became Brinsley Schwarz and then Nick Lowe became that slightly tedious occasional side-kick to Elvis Costello. Twee as they come but never the less how British can you get...On another note I had a dream the other night that Elvis C did a duet with Susan Boyle. At least I think it was a dream!

Kippington Lodge- Shy boy

Never used to really appreciate this side for many a year, giving the v. sim 'Love loves to love love' much more TLC. I recently picked this one outta the gutter at Chez flea and myself and occasional sidekick, Cherryred, have been known to dust it down of late. Great clip!

I can't bear to paste a picture of this over-weight dead guy so I'll let the clip do the talkin'. I'm mumchanced by where this came from but I'm guessing some comedy show from the '90's. Shits and giggles time folks! You can tell he ain't ever heard the origs' as well!

Secret Lemonade quaffing

Den again turns his attention to one artist this week- Lulu. Now, Den couldn't think of anything worse than being stuck in a lift with this diminutive Glasweigan but he's tuned his cab doors into a number of her sixties sides recently. There's a particular place in Den's heart for "Leave a little love". Meanwhile, back in Intake Den has been watching "Ashes to Ashes", "High Spirits with Shirley Ghostman", the last two episodes of "The Devil's Whore" and thumbing through issue 7 of "Bachelor Pad" magazine.

A surprise is always nice and back in the day Den was wandering through a minefield of sides he actively avoided the highly annoying Lulu. Den was confronted with that god-awful Take That track and Lulu breaking into song at the drop of the hat. He distinctly remembers her talking about John Lennon on a documentary and her breaking into "HELP- I need sumbawdy"...Just pretend you don't know any of this garbage and settle into these beauties...

Den's never been one for taking in what he picks up in the daily rags and this is no exception. Yup, it's no "Life on Mars" and Keeley Hawes isn't a patch on John Simm but tune in on Monday's to the great "Ashes to Ashes". Den is beginning to develop a liking for Shazza- Montserrat Lombard, though he preferred the barnet in series 1! Check out the link below to Auntie Beebs website. Despite being an obvious gag the Gene Hunt pith on the TOTP clips are worth a look!

Not much to say as let your eyes feast on Roxi Dlite- current star of the great Bachelor Pad Magazine. There's a great set of snaps of Roxi making some lemonade! Damn! I've got a thirst!
